UniReader for Mac

Privacy

UniReader is made for people who want a good reader without handing their library or their habits to advertisers. The app works for you, on your Mac — not the other way round.

Your books stay with you

  • Your documents and your reading history are never uploaded to our servers. We have no copy of your library.
  • No account is needed to read your own files.
  • There are no advertising trackers and no analytics tools in the app. We don’t build a profile of you.
  • If you keep books in iCloud Drive or another synced folder, that service handles the sync under your own account; UniReader simply reads the files.

Looking up a book online

When you ask UniReader to find a book’s details, it sends what identifies it — title, author, ISBN, DOI or arXiv number — to Open Library, Crossref or arXiv, and downloads the cover you choose. Nothing is sent unless you ask.

The reading assistant (AI)

The assistant uses your own AI account. Your key is kept in the macOS Keychain and requests go straight to the provider you chose; UniReader never receives your key or your content.

  • Nothing leaves your Mac without your action: the page (its text or its image) is sent only when you ask a question, and the app shows you what will be sent.
  • What you send is then covered by that provider’s own privacy terms.
  • With a local model such as Ollama, nothing leaves your Mac at all.

Sync between your devices

If you turn on sync, your progress, highlights and notes travel through Apple’s iCloud under your Apple Account, and between the Mac and iPhone or iPad over your own network. We run no server of our own for it.

Trial and purchases

Purchases are handled by Apple; we only learn whether Premium is active. To count the 10-day trial, the app keeps a sealed record on the device — and in your iCloud, if you use it — that contains no personal information.

This website

We count visits with a simple counter on our own server. There are no advertising networks, no social media pixels and no cross-site tracking. One cookie remembers the language you chose on the site.

Our host keeps ordinary web logs (address, time, page) for security; we don’t use them to profile anyone.
